Exhale Ashore: Wellness Shore Excursions for Your Next Cruise

We've already written about the spa and fitness side of life on board. This post is about something different: the wellness experiences waiting for you on land, in port. Think sweat lodges in Mexico, volcanic mud in the Caribbean, yoga on the beach, and thermal pools in Europe and Iceland.
Kara comes to this with a background in holistic medicine, cancer coaching, and healthy eating, so she's always looking for ways to make a vacation feel restorative, not just busy. Jerry, a former brewer at 5 Branches Brewing, is all for slowing down, too. We both think a wellness shore excursion is one of the best ways to "exhale" on a cruise.
One honest note before we start: wellness tours are a small niche, and cruise lines add and drop them often. Check your cruise planner for your sailing before you get your heart set on any tour below.
The Main Types of Wellness Shore Excursions
Mayan temazcal sweat lodges (Costa Maya and Cozumel)
A temazcal is a traditional Mayan sweat lodge ritual. In Costa Maya, both NCL and Carnival offer shaman-led wellness rituals of about 80 minutes. They include a copal cleansing, an herbal bath, the temazcal itself, a clay ritual, a coconut bath, and a hammock massage. These take place in the port area, so you won't spend your day on a bus. Carnival's version is limited to six guests.
From Cozumel, NCL runs a full-day version that pairs a shaman-led temazcal with a swim in a cenote and an underground river, plus lunch. It includes a ferry to Playa del Carmen, lasts about eight hours, and is rated "Challenging."
Volcanic mud baths and hot springs (St. Lucia and Dominica)
In St. Lucia, NCL and Carnival both sell tours to the volcanic mud baths at Sulphur Springs, paired with other stops. NCL adds a sugar mill and lunch, and Carnival adds Morne Coubaril Estate and a Marigot Bay viewpoint.
In Dominica, the hot sulphur pools at Wotten Waven are the draw. NCL's tour from Roseau includes a 30-minute mineral bath and a waterfall swim. Carnival's pairs a swim in Titou Gorge with a 30-minute soak. Both run about three hours.
Beach and paddleboard yoga (Roatán, Half Moon Cay, Ocean Cay, Bimini)
If you'd rather stretch than soak, look at beach yoga. In Roatán, Honduras, NCL's "Breath & Balance, Yoga Wellness Tour" combines a beachside yoga class, a detox-juice workshop, and free beach time.
Holland America lists yoga on the beach among the relaxation options at Half Moon Cay. MSC announced a daily wellness and sports program at Ocean Cay, rolling out in phases from January 2026. It includes sunrise yoga with sound-healing meditation and a "fire and ice" challenge that mixes hot yoga with ice baths. Virgin Voyages names stand-up paddleboard (SUP) yoga at its Beach Club in Bimini.
Thermal baths in Europe and Iceland
- Ischia, from Naples: Carnival's day trip takes a ferry to the island of Ischia, stops in Sant'Angelo, then gives you about three hours at Poseidon Gardens, a thermal spa with more than 10 pools.
- Terme dei Papi, near Rome: Oceania and Regent both offer tours to these "Thermal Baths of the Popes" from the port of Civitavecchia.
- Blue Lagoon, from Reykjavik: Holland America's tour gives you about two hours in the lagoon, with a silica mask, towel, and drink included. NCL also lists Blue Lagoon tours.
- Santorini's springs: Virgin Voyages offers a "Volcano Hiking & Springs" Shore Thing, which combines a boat ride, a hike, and a soak in the caldera hot springs.
Named Wellness Programs on Luxury Lines
Mainstream lines sell wellness tours one at a time. A few luxury lines group them into named collections.
Seabourn Mindful Living
Seabourn's "Mindful Living" tours tie in with its Spa & Wellness with Dr. Andrew Weil program. One example is a guided hike through the Bonifatu Forest from Calvi, Corsica, led by a certified instructor, followed by free time to swim. It's rated strenuous.
Oceania Wellness Discovery Tours
Oceania offers more than 50 small-group "Wellness Discovery Tours" across Asia, Europe, and South America. Examples include yoga and wine tasting overlooking the Santorini caldera, volcanic thermal pools near Naples, and a healthy cliffside stroll near Bilbao.
Regent Seven Seas Wellness Tours
Regent's "Wellness Tours" include sunset yoga by the sea in Tenerife and a Corfu tour with yoga, meditation, and an organic vegetarian lunch. Many are included with Regent's complimentary excursions, while some cost extra.
Practical Tips Before You Book
Accessibility
Most of these tours are not wheelchair accessible. Expect soft sand, uneven ground, or long periods of standing. The mud baths in St. Lucia involve steps down into the pools, and Dominica's hot springs have natural steps too. If mobility is a concern, talk to us first and we'll help you find a better fit.
Health restrictions
Sweat lodges and hot springs usually aren't recommended if you're pregnant or have heart, respiratory, blood pressure, or back issues. Many tours also have weight limits, often in the 250 to 300 pound range, and age limits, often 12 and up. The thermal pools on Ischia aren't suitable for anyone under 16. If you have a health condition, check with your doctor first.
What to pack
Wear a dark swimsuit, or an old one you don't mind losing. Sulphur and mud stain. For Italian thermal spas, bring a swim cap, since some requireone. At the Blue Lagoon, shower before you go in and protect your hair.
Book early
Small-group tours fill up fast. Carnival's Costa Maya ritual, for example, caps at six guests. If one catches your eye, book it early.
Cruise line tours vs. independent tours
When you book through the cruise line, the ship waits for you if your tour runs late. Independent tours carry return-time risk, so leave a generous buffer, especially for Ischia and the Blue Lagoon.
Tender ports need extra time
At some ports, a small boat called a tender carries you from the ship to shore. Allow extra time on those days. We explain how it works in our post on tender ports.
